RSS can be seen as a protocol where you easily can subscribe to content based on your own interests and needs. You aggregate this content with a RSS reader or an aggregator (for example Google Reader or Bloglines). Once logged on you automatically receive updates and this can save you a lot of time and effort. Basically it is an advanced way to organize the huge amount of information on the Internet.
